For the U-32 fall variety show, Libby Belitsos and I performed the song “Lover Please Stay” by the band Nothing But Thieves. Libby sang the song a capella as I danced. Throughout the audition and rehearsal process I changed developed the dance each time we performed. I never did it exactly the same way. So the video at the variety show is one version of “Lover”. I guess it could be called the final product, but the truth of the matter is that this piece could keep evolving. My portfolio has youtube videos of this process. This piece worked for me because I didn’t have big expectations or standards that I wanted to meet like I have done with other pieces. I also didn’t have to be concerned with translating the movement I made onto other people. And if I wanted to change something about the dance, I was the only one who had to remember -- and if I wanted to change my mind, I easily could. I’d like to try choreographing with and for other people again, but I think this self study is valuable and will help me work with others when I know more about how I work and have more practice with it. This project mainly proved to me that choreography doesn’t have to be complicated and stressful. It doesn’t have to be extensively planned out. And, most importantly, it gave me confidence to do and show on my own. I had libby up there with me and to exchange ideas with, helped me feel more comfortable on stage and helped me make decisions without much back-and-forth. Even though I was not alone on stage, it was the first time I’d danced alone on stage. Now I know that I want to do that more. There is a more in depth analysis of my process for this project that I wrote a few days after on my portfolio website. Next for me is to keep exploring my movement on my own and with others. I want to collaborate again. A few weeks ago Noah and I danced around the VT college green with one of his lengths of tulle. We improved and explored what we could make and talked about making a piece out of it. I think we were both serious about what we were suggesting and will try to pursue this project soon.
