In my learning plan I talked about how I planned to watch videos, study choreographers, and make work inspired by what I found. I have done this in part. I have been reading about Twyla Tharp and I’ve reflected on her books and some videos, preparing to make a piece. However, this week demanded my attention to be focused on writing my narrative. So I plan to do this next week. I did make a piece last week inspired by and to the song and the format we have in Rose Lynch’s fusion class “Way Down Hadestown” by Anais Mitchell. This idea originated to be a weekly improv session. Then it changed into making a weekly phrase, sometimes just inspired by a song, a choreographer, an issue… And I had this idea earlier in the quarter but it wasn’t happening. This wasn’t working because I wasn’t be specific: I didn’t choose a time, I didn’t have a place, I didn’t have a way to play music and record at the same time. Twyla Tharp has “got a lot to say about the ritual of creating. How establishing a routine takes away the question "Why am I doing this?" and makes creativity happen on a schedule” (blog post 10/13/17). I had been planning on this routine time to create and Twyla’s words have encouraged me to work harder for this. I want this to happen because I think it will train me to choreograph quicker and help me learn more about about the people that influenced the dance world by creating their own style. On my portfolio website is a source page with notes that I have been adding to. The bottom of it includes my observations of Twyla’s dances. There is also a question formulation template I filled out for choreography. Right now I am working mostly on the question “How do I dance?” Adrian helped me contact Erin to find out when the theater is available to use. My schedule lines up with an open theater during band 4. So, all I need is to get an adult in there with me to use the space. I am working on getting a camera, too. Then I’ll have the tools I need to make this happen. So, I haven’t quite been fulfilling what I wanted to in my learning plan, but I’m almost there. I’ve also been studying dance in the dance studio, which has been influencing my movement and pursuits. I’ve been taking fusion with Rose Lynch on Wednesdays. I’m starting to take contact improv at The Everything Place on Thursdays. And I will take idea catalyst credit for the existence of a four week swing dancing class at the Maple Corner Community Center. These may all seem different of the surface, but I’m discovering that they have many similarities.
